AFTERCARE PROGRAMME
The first year of recovery tends to be the most difficult. It’s a time when the patient experiences high levels of stress and must develop the coping skills to deal with it clean and sober. The brain rebalances its neurochemistry. Organs have to repair their functioning. Adjustments to the family and work compete for time needed to establish a firm foundation in a recovery fellowship. Too much stress can lead to relapse. And so at PROMIS we provide every patient with an Aftercare Plan that anticipates problems and identifies coping strategies. Included in the Aftercare Plan are weekly group meetings with other people who are new to recovery. Sometimes 1:1 counselling on specific issues is necessary. And of course we help each patient get active in 12-Step recovery programs like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. Research shows that patients who take their aftercare program seriously stay clean and sober and go on to realize their full life potential.
